Don’t Make These Common New Blogger Mistakes

Firstly, let me congratulate you on deciding to start a blog! Welcome to the wonderful world of blogging, my friend! You’re going to be great at it! To encourage you and your new blog to be pro from the start, check out these tips on common new blogger mistakes to avoid.

Ignoring Your Audience

The first word in social media is, after all, social. If someone takes time out of their day to comment on your social media or blog post, take a moment to respond. Respond to every single comment, even the negative ones. When your blog goes viral you may find that responding to all of the comments and emails is nearly impossible to do all on your own. I recommend hiring a virtual assistant, (it is not expensive, and definitely worth it!) a VA can take on some or all of your blog-related and social media tasks so that your valuable time can be freed up to produce more content! Whenever I need some extra help, I use either 24/7 Virtual Assistants or Fiverr.

Not Defining A Niche

When it comes to running a successful blog, a niche is key. You probably love a million different things that could make for a million blog posts, but it is super important to narrow down your interests, pick one or two and develop your blog with solely those main niche topics. If your blog has too many unrelated topics going on, it will confuse your readers, and limit your blog’s ability to grow a community.

Having Poor Quality Images

There’s a good chance that you are here reading this post because the accompanying image caught your attention on Pinterest, Facebook, or Twitter, and it inspired you to click. Having high quality, visually Pinterestable images on your blog is SO important these days. Good quality imagery is what takes your blog from cool to stellar, and sets you apart from the crowd. Having high-quality images that are in line with your brand and niche from the start will make your blog look professional and memorable!

Using A “Free” Blogging Host

Blogging hosts like Tumblr and Blogger that offer ‘free’ blog hosting are not actually free at all. This is because they don’t let you make money, run your own ads, or host promoted content/affiliate links.  And brands and companies won’t become affiliates with you unless you own your domain and host. Having your blog on one of those ‘free’ sites will actually cost you a lot of money in losses from not being able to monetize. In order to set up your blog the RIGHT way so that you can earn an income from it, read my easy step by step guide.

Having A Lackluster Theme

Why do so many blogs look exactly the same? Is it because some people are just boring with no interest in design? I doubt it! There is no reason to have a dull looking blog when there are literally thousands of theme options out there. You may think that you don’t have the budget to spend on a fancy custom theme, but there are actually a ton of gorgeous, unique blog themes that are affordable too. Here is a list of beautiful and responsive themes for under $20!

Not Promoting Your Blog Efficiently

If you want people to find your blog, you need to be promoting it all day every day, across all of your social media platforms. This is a huge task, and unless you have a staff of people to help you with this, it would be impossible to do manually on your own. Fortunately, there are some extremely useful tools to handle the task of promoting your blog content for you. I use Tailwind to schedule all of my pins – it is such a useful tool, I swear by it, and honestly, I couldn’t run my blog without it. Tailwind makes it possible to schedule hundreds of pins to go out to my boards and my group boards on auto-pilot. I spend about twenty minutes once a week scheduling my pins for the entire week. And the amount of traffic I get from this is astronomical! Additionally, I use SmarterQueue to do this for auto-posts to Facebook and Twitter. This app has so many awesome features – but my favorite is that you can set your evergreen content to continue to post forever. Both SmarterQueue and Tailwind allow you to create Instagram posts with captions and hashtags, schedule it and set a reminder to post it.

You should plot out a solid plan for how/when/what you want to be posting on social media, and where. For a blueprint on how to do this, download my free blog planner below, and check out this post: Create Your Social Media Game-Plan.

Not Having An Opt-In Freebie

See that free blog planner above? That’s an opt-in freebie! I can’t stress the importance of building a mail list enough! You need a simple way for readers of your site to become subscribers of your site! In exchange for their email, you should offer your readers an opt-in incentive, such as a free ebook, printable, or discount for a product or service that you offer on your site. I use  Convertkit to manage my subscribers, and I highly recommend you use it too.  Convertkit makes it easy to set up opt-in forms, collect email addresses, and send out newsletters. Plus the automation features are the best I’ve found with any other mail service.

Missing Opportunities To Monetize

You can (and should!) be monetizing every single post. If you mention a product that you use, you should help your readers out by linking to where that product can be purchased, and in turn help yourself out by generating income for your work. You can do this by becoming an affiliate for companies and brands. Then whenever your readers click on your link and make a purchase, you will get a commission for helping to refer them to it. 3. Starting a blog with free hosting is not a mistake. I don’t think anyone who has the funds would choose otherwise. If you don’t earn money in USD, paying $100 for a year of hosting might be a lot to do. So, if someone starts out small on a free host, it’s not a mistake. It’s a start till they become financial buoyant to pay for hosting.

Hi Krista, You are totally right, it is not a mistake to start on a free plan, we all did it myself included, when starting out blogging for fun. But when we are talking about blogging as a business, blogging with the intention to earn an income, you need to self host and own your content, so a free plan won’t cut it. There’s nothing wrong with blogging for fun and using a free plan if your goal is simply to write. But when your goal is to make money blogging, its a mistake to use a free host. Thank you for your comment, I hope I explained that better 🙂
