How To Switch From Bluehost To Siteground (And Get Your Money Back!)

Something I hear a lot from my students and readers is that they wish they hadn’t hosted their website with Bluehost, before learning of other hosts, and now feel stuck waiting out their term.

The good news is that you CAN switch to another webhost at anytime, and Bluehost will give you a prorated refund for the remainder of your term!

For example, that means if you purchased hosting for one year and have used two months of it already, when you cancel you will get your money back for the remaining 10 months of your term.

Plus, a Siteground rep will handle the transfer of your website for you, for free.

Why switch to Siteground?

As a web developer I have personally dealt with over 30 webhosting companies over the years and can confidently recommend Siteground as the best. Here’s why:

Siteground is faster, and can handle more traffic.

I have switched all of my websites to Siteground and recommend all of my client’s websites be hosted with them now too as they just make websites run smoother. Simple as that! No downtime or mysterious ‘server errors’ as commonly experienced with other hosts.

Siteground is more secure.

Siteground uses state of the art technology to protect it’s websites. It has built-in hack protection and account isolation that other hosts can not match.

Siteground customer support is actually supportive.

The customer support with Siteground is incredible! I have personally reached out to Siteground with various questions and have been treated SO WELL every time.

In both phone and chat support a customer service rep picked up my call in a matter of seconds, offered friendly and informed help in easy to understand terms. Never confusing tech jargon terms like I’ve experienced with other host’s customer service. Siteground reps resolve your issues and speak to you in plain non-techy English, without making you feel like a noob.

Siteground is affordable.

Siteground’s dedicated WordPress.org hosting is less than $4 per month with this link.

That is an unbeatable deal and using it means that you are self-hosting your website, making it possible for you to monetize and make money from your blog right away.

Steps To Switch From Bluehost To Siteground (And Get Your Money Back!)

These steps to switch to Sitegroud from Bluehost can be applied to most hosting providers, not just Bluehost. Always check with your host to make sure you are eligible for a refund before making the switch.

Step 1.

Contact your host and ask them to verify that you will be given a pro-rated refund if you change to a different host. Once you have the green light, end your call, do not cancel your hosting yet.

Step 2.

Purchase WordPress hosting with Siteground.

For a step-by-step guide on setting up a new account, read this guide. When you get to the step asking if you want to register a new domain or transfer an existing domain, choose ‘Transfer an existing domain.’

Step 3.

Once you are logged in to your new Siteground dashboard choose ‘support’ and then open a ticket to request to have your website transferred to the new host. A Siteground support rep will transfer your website free!

Click the Support tab at the top of your dashboard:

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘Contact us here.’

A request ticket tab will open. Click ‘Transfer Website.’

You will then be able to provide your CPanel / WordPress log in  details. The support ticket will be initiated and aSiteground rep will begin working on your site transfer. They will contact you with updates as the transfer progresses.

The transfer may take up to 24 hours to complete. They will contact you once your website is completely transferred.

Step 4.

When the transfer is complete you can go back to your Bluehost cpanel to change your nameservers. This is done by going to Domains – Manage domains – Nameservers and changing the Bluehost nameservers to your new Siteground ones.

Siteground will tell you what the namerservers should be set to. Allow an hour or so for the nameservers to update.

Step 5.

Once your nameservers have been changed, contact Bluehost chat support and have them close your account and give you a prorated refunded.

That’s it! You are now self-hosted with Siteground and can log into your WordPress as normal!

  1. Thank you so much for giving this step-by-step! Migrating my site sounded so scary at first…I feel more confident about it now. I’m so tired of Bluehost! Have only heard good things about Siteground lately.
The referral link doesn’t seem to work anymore…The discounted price you were talking about isn’t showing up. Do they still do this, and is there an updated link?

      1. Hi Alissa, you will get a refund. Contact Bluehost chat and talk to a rep, ask for a prorated refund. You will be refunded, I was given one after being with them for 4 months. Good luck!

        1. It took some pushing!..But finally worked around it!
I was with them for about 9 months, and had a dizzying 26.8 to go that they were saying i can’t get back if i leave, because they changed their refund policies.
I didn’t get a full refund, but i was able to get most of it back by downgrading to less time (one month) and paying a fee for the 3 year discount i had previously applied to my account.

Cannot emphasize your point enough about VERIFYING specifically about your own account’s ability to be refunded…I asked about their prorated refunds in multiple ways before asking the rep to verify whether it applies to MY OWN account. Totally different answers! Big “NO” for my account, which led to
“Is there any way?… I paid for 3 years, because that’s what i was told is best to do, and i was told that i could get my money back if i wasn’t happy.” and FINALLY discussion of possible solutions!

  2. I’ve been with SiteGround for a couple of years now – and i couldn’t be happier! It’s nice to see all the reasons I switched so clearly explained. I’m going to be showing this post to my clients!
    Thanks!

  3. So many people have issues with BlueHost– I know a ton who have switched over to SiteGround! Thanks for outlining exactly how to do it. Next time I talk to someone about it, I’ll be sure to point them in the direction of this post!
