Typing for Money – How Much Can You Earn?
The earnings you make freelance writing can vary from job to job. It really does depend on who your work for, how specialized the job is and how skilled you are.
If you have expert-level knowledge or are a highly-skilled writer, you can charge higher rates as not many others will be able to do this type of work.
Some companies will pay per amount of words you produce, some will pay you by the hour and you may get paid per views on an article you contribute.
For the typing for money jobs I mention below, you can expect to earn anywhere between $15-$350 per project.
Of course, this prediction is not set in stone and will vary depending on your experience, skills and the amount of effort you put in.
How to Make Money Typing Online?
Typing for money can start as a side gig, but if you’re consistent, it’s entirely possible to make it into a full-time career.
Below I have detailed 7 ways to get high paying writing clients. I’ve given you a variety of ways, that you don’t normally see in other articles and the last method may surprise you!
Take a look at my 7 top ways to earn money by typing.
1. Writezilla Resume Writer
Writezilla is a great platform to find high paying freelance writing work. What I like about these guys is that they have many types of writing jobs available including; resume writing jobs, technical writing jobs, book writing jobs, essay writing jobs, philosophy writers needed, science writing jobs, homework help jobs and much more.
They claim to have 100+ new writing jobs coming to them daily, meaning there should be a steady stream of varied work.
They have a simple application process for new writers which includes;
- Signing up
- Submitting samples
- Passing an English test
Upon acceptance, you will have access to a huge amount of writing jobs including resume writing gigs, which pays $15 per page. Support is available 24/7 no matter what time zone you’re in and you can withdraw your earnings twice a month.
2. Linkable Guest Post Writer
You can earn money by typing guest posts as a Linkable elite author. Linkable is a platform that connects skilled writers with companies that want to build their backlink profile through guest posting.
You have to apply to be a Linkable author and get accepted. Then you can apply for projects posted by content marketers.
Link building is a way for websites to build their domain authority by having quality articles posted on high DA (Domain Authority) sites, with a link included which points back to their website. The higher quality links a website has pointing to them, the more traffic they will receive from Google and the higher rank they will receive.
This is why Linkable writers can earn a huge amount of money by typing guest posts. The platform reports writers earning around $375 for every link they build, but this can balloon to $1,000 depending on the client.
3. Medical Transcriptionist
Medical transcriptionists do on average, earn more money typing than other transcriptionists. This is because it is a more specialised field requiring more training.
Medical transcription requires post-secondary training and certification, plus either a 1-year certification programme or a 2-year associates degree.
A degree of training and understanding is needed to do this job well, as you will often transcribe hard to understand doctor’s dictations. But don’t let this put you off. If you put the work in, you’ll likely get a decent amount of steady work as not anyone can get this work.
Pay can start around $15 per hour, increasing to $25-$30 an hour, depending on where you live.
4. WhatCulture Contributor
WhatCulture was founded in 2006 and publishes articles to do with film, TV, Hollywood, gaming, science, technology, sport, literature, music and even wrestling! They have grown to have a monthly audience of over 10 million and also produce their own videos, podcasts, books and magazines.
This busy entertainment website accepts high-quality guest posts from contributors. If you feel you could write in any of the topics mentioned, you can make money typing online at WhatCulture. Apply by sending them an email with your CV plus
- A sample article
- Details of your specific areas of interest
- Links to any existing work
- How much you can contribute
Pay is determined on how many views your articles get in the first 30-days, so quality, engaging work counts! There is no limit on how many articles you can contribute, but they will be checked by their editorial team before being accepted.
5. Upwork Specialised Writer
Typing for money on Upwork or any of the other freelancer platforms has a bit of bad rep due to many being notorious for bad pay. The thing is, this is usually when writers just advertise themselves as generalist writers and end up competing with many other writers.
The way to make yourself stand out on Upwork is by specialising in one type of writing. While you may not have any type of specialist knowledge or skills, a way around this is to take some courses to make yourself stand out.
Take a look at Udemy and Skillshare for some great cheap or free courses. Another idea is to think of a passion you have or something you enjoy.
For example, if you love cooking, bodybuilding, phones and computers, building websites or travelling, you could make money by writing for websites in these fields.
Set yourself up a profile on Upwork and tell people how you can help them. You can set your own rates and increase these over time as you gain more testimonials and experience.
6. Social Media Writer Scripted
You can make money typing online by applying to be a writer with Scripted. To write for clients on Scripted, they ask you to set up a profile, pass a test and set up your payment portal. Once accepted you can propose jobs to customers and apply for jobs advertised in a range of writing fields.
Social media writing is one option, with many big businesses not having time to update their social accounts. If you have a decent social media following yourself and know how to woo the masses with awesome, engaging posts, this could be an easy way to earn money by typing.
Other types of writing gigs you can get on Scripted are; ghostwriting, blog writing, product descriptions, press releases, newsletters, video scripts and much more.
Scripted details that writers earn on average of over 10 cents per word, but you can set your own rate.
7. Message Lapsed Blog Owners Google
This is my tried and tested secret weapon on how to make money typing online. And, it’s a much overlooked and underused method by many aspiring writers.
Sometimes it’s good to think out of the box and get off the platforms where there are many people to compete against for work.
This is a method you can create opportunities yourself, by doing a little outreach.
As we all know, Google is a massive search engine where billions of businesses are fighting for places on the coveted first page. If a business doesn’t appear on the first page for certain keywords, it’s likely they’ll never get found.
Think about it – how often do you click past the first page when searching for something? Not often right?
And, a big reason business websites don’t make the first page is that they either;
- Don’t have a blog section
- Or they have a blog and they haven’t updated it for years
Having an active blog plays an integral part in boosting a business’s SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). This is important to Google and will help it decide how important a website is and where it should be ranked.
This is where you can help and make money typing online for businesses lapsed or missing blog.
Here are the steps to take to find and outreach to lapsed blogs on Google;
- Type a keyword in Google plus the area, eg; food delivery companies Rome, fitness supplement shops Melbourne, pet product companies Manchester, skiing equipment outlets Austria, hen party companies London
- Check websites to see if they have a blog or if they do have one when was the last blog post entry? Targeting websites from the 2nd page onwards is advised, as these are the ones who have usually ignored their blogs.
Check this site below. The last blog post was added in October 2016!
- If the blog is lapsed or missing, contact the company via their form or by email. Praise the company, tell them you like their website but noticed the blog was missing/lapsed, tell them how regular blog content can boost SEO, offer your services as a writer and share your rates
- Repeat the above steps as many times as you can
- Think about repeating the above processes in multiple niches you would like to write in. Remember you can also target the same niche in different towns and cities eg; pet products London, pet products Dublin, pet products Florida etc…
Many of your emails will get ignored, but if you put the effort in you should start to see responses. Many website owners may not realize how valuable blog content is for their business, or maybe they just haven’t had the time to update it?
Either way, this is where you can step in and make money typing online for their blog.
Make Money Typing Online – Conclusion
I hope this has given you some different ideas on how to make money typing online.
While there are plenty of freelancer platforms and websites offering writing gigs, I wanted to show you a few ways that are not just applying in the usual places.
There has never been a better time to start learning typing skills and researching companies that offer remote work. As time moves on, more and more companies will be employing staff remotely, so get in there while you can!
While earning money by typing is great, it can also be uncertain, so my best advice is to learn a few different skills and set up multiple passive income streams. This will ensure you always have money coming in, even if you lose freelance clients, or one income stream suddenly doesn’t perform so well.
