Planning the Perfect Day in South Cowichan, Itinerary

Planning the Perfect Day in South Cowichan

Planning to visit the Cowichan Valley soon? Or just quickly driving past Mill Bay on your way between Victoria and Nanaimo? I know just the spots you should visit!

There is a version of a day trip where you spend most of it in the car, squinting at directions, eating a gas-station sandwich because nothing panned out. This is the opposite of that day.

South Cowichan is small enough that you can string several genuinely good stops together without rushing, and close enough together that you are never more than a few minutes from the next one.

I have done this loop more times than I can count, and it has earned its place as the one I hand to anyone who asks where to go. A beautiful farm market, a winery patio that does not quit, a dairy farm with a cheese vending machine (truly), and soft serve to finish.

Here is your perfect South Cowichan itinerary.

Sweet Meadows Market

I am starting you here because it sets the tone for the whole day, and because it is, hands down, the most beautiful grocery store you will ever walk into. Sweet Meadows sits on Church Way in Mill Bay, looking out over the farm.

Inside, it is all fresh-cut flowers and produce pulled from local farms, with pantry essentials sold in glass jars so you can shop without dragging home a pile of plastic. I could spend an embarrassing amount of time just photographing the bulk spices and teas lined up in mason jars, so do not let me linger too long or we will never make it out.

The real secret is at the back: a little cafe counter with freshly made pastries and artisan ice cream churned in-house. The sour cherry is the one people lose their minds over, tart and creamy at the same time, and there are dairy-free options too.

Don’t just grab your coffee and go! You simply must sit on the patio and take in the view. This is your welcome to the valley.

KÁVA & Co. Coffee

KÁVA & Co. Coffee in Mill Bay is a lovely coffee stop, with freshly roasted beans, fun latte art, and a case of pastries and quiche that makes the “I’ll just grab a coffee” plan fall apart in the best way. There are gluten-free treats too.

Blue Grouse Estate Winery

Blue Grouse Estate Winery, out on Lakeside Road near Duncan, is one of the more modern wineries in the Cowichan Valley, and the patio dining experience is genuinely stunning: rolling green hills, neat rows of vines, a building that manages to feel sleek and cozy at once.

Enjoy a flame-fired pizza, and tasting flight. Which is reason enough to time your visit for late afternoon and let it roll into golden hour.

Unsworth Vineyards

Unsworth Vineyards in Mill Bay sits right beside our market and creamery cluster, with a farmhouse restaurant and a tasting room that opens onto a pond, very lovely on a summer afternoon, and the sparkling rosé is worth ordering.

Merridale Cidery & Distillery

And if cider is more your speed than wine, Merridale in Cobble Hill is set among apple trees and gardens, with ciders, a distillery, wood-fired pizza, and a dog-friendly lower deck. On summer weekends they stay open until eight, so it makes a relaxed evening stop.

Cowichan Station Creamery

visit the cheese vending machine in cowichan

Just five minutes down the road from the winery is Cowichan Station Creamery, home of the thing I love telling people about: a cheese vending machine. Yes, a vending machine, for those after-hours emergencies when you really need artisanal cheese.

There is also a farm shop where you can taste a selection of cheese before you buy, while watching live CCTV footage of the cows. And yes – you can also see the cows in person-uh-in bovine in the field, when you drive in.

Quick heads-up so you can plan the day correctly: the vending machine is open daily: 7 AM – 7 PM, but the shop is open Friday through Sunday only.

Good to know: Cowichan Station Creamery is a KIND dairy farm that actually looks after their cows

Here, the cows roam freely in forest pastures all year round. Calves stay with their mothers for months, nursing naturally until the mother decides it is time to wean. And when the older cows are ready to retire, they get to live out the rest of their natural days right here on the farm.

Some of the animals are rescues, there are a couple of donkeys, a shop dog, and a very social cat running the place.

Home for Hooves Animal Sanctuary

A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary on Howie Road is right by the creamery, a place where rescued farm animals get to simply live well. Check ahead for visiting details and book a tour!

Miller + Co.

Miller + Co. Furniture and Pottery is a must for me. Jen throws gorgeous pottery, Devin builds heirloom furniture from reclaimed wood, and the studio welcomes you like family. Open Thursday through Saturday.

Drifters Creamery Truck

The Drifters truck offers delicious soft serve in a laid-back outdoor atmosphere. They offer vegan and gluten-free, as well as regular dairy.

Bright Angel Regional Park

If you want to walk something off between all the eating, Bright Angel Regional Park is a gem. Easy, well-kept trails through old-growth forest along the Koksilah River, a suspension bridge the kids (and I) get a kick out of, and quiet swimming spots when the weather is right. It is the kind of place that resets you mid-day.

A small, free moment I love: the Shawnigan Creek Stone Bridge near Mill Bay. A short, peaceful walk over an old stone bridge with little waterfalls, and a side trail that takes you underneath to more falls. It costs nothing and it is the kind of quiet pretty that makes a day feel complete.
